|William Carberry came to South Dakota as head coach at Yankton High School in 1908 after an outstanding athletic career at the University of Iowa. Before coming to Northern State College in 1933 he coached at Southern Normal (also known as University of South Dakota, Springfield).
Carberry served as athletic director at Northern from 1933 until his retirement in 1955. To Northern students of the depression years and the 40’s Carberry was more than the title “coach” implies. He helped hundreds of young men secure their degrees, working many angles to get them room and board at minimum prices. Any boy who needed help found a friend in Bill Carberry. <p>Carberry was named to the South Dakota Sports hall of Fame in 1969 and the Northern State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1973. He has received many other honors during his long coaching career.
