Teacher Section

The Teacher Section is designed to be used as a resource for teachers using this website with their students. Each of the Discussion Questions and Classroom Activities can be used with any or all of the inductees to enhance student learning. Worksheets are available to download for classroom use. 

Discussion Questions


1. What goals did each famous South Dakotan set for himself/herself? What goals have you set for yourself?

2. What opportunities and challenges did each individual face as they were growing up?

3. What evidence can you find about the character of this person that made him/her successful?

4. Into what categories could you divide this group of famous South Dakotans? (ie. men, women)

5. What questions would you ask if you were able to interview one of these South Dakotans?

6. What contributions has each individual made in his/her lifetime? What facts would you use to support your view?

7. What character traits do you have in common with any of these famous South Dakotans?

8. Based on what you now know about each individual, who do you admire most? What information would you use to support your choice?

Classroom Activities / Standards

1. Create a timeline to show important events in one of the South Dakotans life. Timeline Maker or Interactive Timeline are resources for creating this activity online. Additionally, students could create a timeline that features several South Dakotans to compare their places in South Dakota history.

2. Have students use Bookr to create photobooks with text using Flickr images. These can then be shared online. An example of this type of online book is shown below.

3. Use My Great Maps to create a map of South Dakota that shows the birth places of the famous South Dakotans. Students could also create a United States map for an individual that features various places that this person lived and worked.

4. A fun activity is Flickr Poet. It is a quick way of turning a sentence, poem, or short paragraph into a sequence of Flickr photographs. You can embed or share the images, however, you could Print Screen or use a camera to capture the creation.

5. Create a cartoon comic strip to share information about one of the famous South Dakotans. Try Comic Creator or Make Beliefs Comix.

7. Select one of the famous South Dakotans to create a brochure to share with others. Information on this person's life, work, and contributions could be included. A sample format in Publisher is linked here. SAMPLE BROCHURE

8. As a culminating activity, have students participate in an "Achievers Club." Arrange students in small groups. Ask each group to choose a person they consider a "great achiever" and research that person's life and accomplishments. Have each group create a report on their chosen achiever, explaining why this person is significant, how his or her accomplishments have made a difference, and what obstacles he or she had to overcome along the road to success. Ask students to present their reports to the class. Have students vote for the "greatest" of the achievers.

9. Create a "Hall of Fame" bulletin board in your classroom or in the school hallway by hanging pictures of each person to promote recognition of these special individuals.

10. Write a song or rap about one of the famous South Dakotans.

11. Select a Hall of Fame inductee and make a collage of famous quotes.

12. Select a word from the text or have students come up with a word of their own that is especially meaningful about Billy Mills. Go to Spell with Flickr to create a unique image of this word. These can be then embedded on a webpage to share.

13. As a culminating activity, create an ABC book or presentation about famous South Dakotans. Students could work in groups to make a Power Point slide show to share in class. Another option once completed, the Power Point can be saved as a PDF and uploaded to Youblisher to be shared as an online book.

14. Write a newscast of an important event in one of the famous South Dakotan's life. Select a method of sharing this newcast with classmates, ie. podcast, video, audio recording.

16. Map out a road trip from your home town to a couple of the famous South Dakotan's home towns. Figure out how many miles you will travel, how long it will take, what sites you could see on the way there, how much time in the car, where you would stay, where you would eat, etc.

17. Figure out the distances from your home town to each of the home towns of the famous South Dakotans. Write some story problems about the distances, travel time, etc. Try to include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in your problems.

18. Choose a hometown of a famous South Dakotan and record temperatures for one week in your home town and their home town.  Graph the information on a line graph. Try Create-a-Graph to make the graph online. Save the graph as a jpeg and insert into a Word document. Write some story problems about the information that you have in your graph. Try to include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in your problems.
