   Charles Balcer
Champion of Excellence

 A leader in South Dakota higher education for 35 years, Dr. Charles Balcer served as president of Augustana College from 1965 to 1980 and Distinguished Service Professor thereafter. During his presidency more than 4,500 graduates entered the work world in South Dakota and elsewhere.

Born in McGregor, Iowa, May 23, 1921, Balcer earned M. A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Iowa. Offices held include President of the S.D. Association of Private Colleges, first Chairman of the Planning Commission of the S. D. Department of Education, Commissioner for the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, first educator elected to the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce Board, and National President of Good Samaritan Society.Balcer has been honored by Who's Who in America, Augustana College with an honorary doctorate, and with Norway's Royal Order of Saint Olaf.

Charles and Elizabeth Balcer's four children are all graduates of Augustana.
