Dave Evans
Champion of Excellence

Dave Evans may be a household name in many South Dakota homes as a result of his role as Executive Secretary of the South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA). He held this position from 1970 until his retirement in 1977. It was in 1962 that Dave went to Pierre as Assistant Executive Secretary for the SDHSAA. While Dave’s leadership had certainly been apparent in his previous positions, it was in the spot of Executive Secretary that his ability to balance the interests of many ,while watching out for the good of South Dakota’s young people became keenly apparent.

The National Federation of High School Athletic Associations cited Evans for six years of service on the National High School Football Rules Committee. In 1977, the South Dakota High School Athletic Directors honored him “for the improvement of athletics in South Dakota.” In 1975, he received a Certificate of Merit from the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations. In 1977, Dave received the Distinguished Service Award from Dakota Wesleyan University and again in 1978 from the South Dakota Highs School Activities Association. Dave is also the recipient of the 1977 School Bell award from the Associated School Boards of South Dakota.
From 1935-1942, Evans served as teacher, athletic coach, high school principal and superintendent for the last four years at Belvidere Independent School District, Belvidere, SD. From 1942-1962, he served as superintendent, teacher, coach and counselor at Kadoka Independent School District, Kadoka, SD.
Not only was Dave Evans a fine role model for young people but his contemporaries also appreciated his sterling qualities. He has received numerous awards and each are well deserved for a man who has given so many years to the youth of South Dakota.
