Almon (Hoadley) Dean
|Hoadley Dean graduated in1941 from USD with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He worked as a reporter at the Watertown Public Opinion, the Sioux City (Iowa) Journal and The Associated Press.
During WWII, Dean served in the 7th Service Command Headquarters in Omaha, Neb., and later with the 8th and 6th armies in the Philippines and occupied Japan. After the war, Dean was an assistant to U.S. Sen. Harlan Bushfield and U.S. Rep. Harold Lovre. <p>In 1951, Dean returned to SD to begin his lifelong promotion of the West River area. He became manager of the Black Hills, Badlands & Lakes Association, the tourism promotion group then located in Sturgis. <p>In 1953, Dean and two partners became involved in a stock brokerage, insurance and real estate firm in Rapid City. Dean became president and majority owner before selling his interest in 1962. <p>In 1965, Western SD Development Co. was formed to promote economic development in western SD, with Dean as company president. The company started with 30 members and grew to 70 members before it became inactive after his resignation in 1979 after 14 years as the company’s only president. Dean used his nationwide connections to promote the Black Hills and West River areas. <p>Besides serving as president of the development company, Dean also was a director of Frontier Airlines, the Yellowstone Park Co., the Old West Trail Foundation and National College in Rapid City. <p>Dean served in the SD Senate from 1963-65. He was chairman of the state Highway Commission under former Gov. Joe Foss and served on the state Veterans Commission under former Gov. Joe Foss and served on the state Veterans Commission under former Gov. Sigurd Anderson. <p>Dean was an Episcopalian as well as a member of the Masons, Elks American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disable American Veterans, Shrine, National Aviation Club and the Mount Rushmore national Memorial Society. He was president of the Mount Rushmore Society for a number of years. He also was a vice president of the National Air Force Association. <p>Dean has received many awards and honors throughout his lifetime. He has received the USD Alumni achievement award, Meritorious Service Citation by SDSM&T, South Dakota Highway Hall of Honor, and the Ben Black Tourism award to name a few.
